A's spring training: J.D. Davis calls release by SF Giants a punch to the gut

Sun, 2024-03-17 05:50

New A's third baseman J.D. Davis said he's appreciative of his opportunity with Oakland after absorbing “a punch to the gut” when the Giants released him earlier this week. Davis, who finalized his $2.5 million, one-year deal with the A's on Saturday, was cut by the Giants, who utilized a contractual loophole to part ways with the 30-year-old on Monday after he beat the team last month in arbitration.

Joe Boyle's Walk Total Starting to Pile Up in Oakland A's Camp

Joe Boyle's Walk Total Starting to Pile Up in Oakland A's Camp The Oakland A's presumed fifth starter has been struggling with his control in recent outings Author: Jason Burke Publish date: Mar 17, 2024 2:00 PM EDT Coming into camp, right-hander Joe Boyle was one of the players in contention for the fifth spot in the Oakland A's rotation. When Luis Medina went down due to a right knee sprain, the competition seemed to be over after Boyle got off to a hot start this spring. But over his past three starts, he's been walking more and more guys, so his spot on the roster may not be as solid as we once thought. Boyle is still pitching effectively, holding a 2.93 ERA across 15 1/3 innings

Utah could be home to Major League Baseball as soon as 2025. In January, Oakland A's officials met with the Larry H. Miller Co. about potentially playing in their currently under-construction stadium in Daybreak from 2025 through 2027, while the team waits for their Las Vegas stadium to open in 2028. Amanda Covington, LHM's chief corporate affairs office told me this week at an event hosted by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute.

Houston Astros 2014 Draft Has Paid Off for Oakland A's One if by signing, two if by trade Author: Jason Burke Publish date: Mar 16, 2024 2:00 PM EDT The Houston Astros 2014 Draft is notorious as the one that the club failed to sign left-hander Brady Aiken after selecting him with the first overall pick. As time has gone on, it's becoming clear that the A's were the team to come out furthest ahead from the Astros' selections that year. With the No. 37 pick, the Astros selected Derek Fisher, who made his MLB debut in 2017 and then bounced around a bit from 2019 to 2022 playing for the Blue Jays and Brewers, then in the minors with the Twins. He put up a total of 0.7 WAR for Houston

Athletics agree to deal with ex-Giants, Mets infielder JD Davis

Fri, 2024-03-15 17:25

Manager Mark Kotsay and the Oakland Athletics are currently gearing up for a 2024 MLB season in which they will try to break their recent stretch of mediocrity and burst onto the MLB postseason scene. Kotsay took over as manager for the Athletics in December of 2021 but has been unable to garner much momentum for the franchise, as the team continues to struggle with dwindling attendance as well as subpar play on the field. As the team puts the finishing touches on their preparation for the upcoming season, they're still evidently looking for ways to add to their roster for 2024, as it was recently announced that the Athletics had signed a talented infielder who's enjoyed stints with both the San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets. “Free-agent infielder J.D. Davis and the Oakland A's are in agreement on a contract, pending physical, according to sources familiar with the deal,” reported MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided on his account on X, the social media platform formerly referred to as Twitter.

A's hitters no match for Cubs' pitching phenom Shota Imanaga

Thu, 2024-03-14 18:51

The A's witnessed first hand what all the fuss was about during the winter over Shota Imanaga, an unimposing 5-foot-9 pitcher from Japan with a confounding four-pitch arsenal. Imanaga, who the Chicago Cubs signed to a four-year, $53 million free-agent deal, baffled A's hitters with his mix of a mid-90s fastball, a splitter, slider and curveball while striking out nine of the 16 batters he faced in a 3-1 victory. If it's any solace, the A's aren't alone in their inability to solve the 30-year-old Imanaga, who has now struck out 19 of the 41 hitters he's faced this spring – an unheard of 46.3% strikeout rate. Zack Gelof, Oakland's top hitter and owner of the second-best OPS (1.209) of any hitter in baseball this spring, struck out all three times he faced Imanaga.
