Wed, 2024-03-27 05:30

Alex Wood didn't need to study Zack Gelof for more than a minute or two to know that the Oakland A's have a future star on their hands. “He looks like a big leaguer for sure.” “No, I talked to him today about just being Zack,” A's manager Mark Kotsay said Tuesday.

Spring means MLB opening day is around the corner

Wed, 2024-03-27 04:05

This is a main theme for both fans and players at Spring Training each March in the Cactus League in Arizona, and the Grapefruit League in Florida. Other lifelong baseball fans like myself thrive just wanting to be surrounded by baseball in the warm weather, and maybe seeing the up and coming prospects for their favorite team. This is Spring Training baseball, and for a fourth time I got to experience all of this in Arizona for six days — five games, two practices and one rainstorm last week. Chico Enterprise-Record reporter Justin Couchot watches as the San Francisco Giants take on the Cincinnati Reds from the lawn of Scottsdale Stadium on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 in Scottsdale, California.

Opening Day starter Alex Wood trying to change Oakland A's culture and 'build a winning program'

Tue, 2024-03-26 17:33

For Alex Wood, signing a one-year deal to play for the Oakland A's wasn't simply about individual opportunity. Wood, 33, will get the Opening Day start on Thursday at the Coliseum as the A's kick off their 2024 season looking to improve after back-to-back 100-loss seasons. “I want to set the example of what that looks like on a day-to-day basis and what goes into it, to have a winning culture and build a winning program.” The idea that the A's will be anything but last-place finishers in the American League West for the third straight year requires a bit of optimism.

Former Pacer makes Oakland A's Opening Day roster

Tue, 2024-03-26 16:46

Mar. 26—A big Spring Training has produced a big result for former USC Aiken pitcher Mitch Spence. Spence knew every time he took the mound this spring would be important; the first overall selection in the 2023 Rule 5 draft by the Oakland A's, Spence was going to have to make Oakland's Opening Day roster. If he didn't make the final cut, he'd be offered back to the New York Yankees who could ...

Los Angeles Dodgers Trade T.J. McFarland To Oakland Athletics

Tue, 2024-03-26 14:27

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced they've traded T.J. McFarland to the Oakland Athletics for cash considerations. McFarland signed a Minor League deal with the Dodgers in the offseason and was part of their non-roster invitees to Spring Training. The left-handed reliever appeared in seven games, posting a 1.35 ERA and 0.60 WHIP with seven strikeouts across 6.2 innings. Despite his strong spring, it was unlikely the 34-year-old would pitch for the Dodgers anytime soon due to their crowded bullpen with Alex Vesia and Ryan Yarbrough both locked in as the lefties out of the bullpen on the active roster.
