A's get MLB, union OK to receive revenue sharing

Tue, 2024-01-16 17:15

The Oakland Athletics were given approval from Major League Baseball and the players' association to receive revenue sharing money this year even if a binding agreement to construct a ballpark in Las Vegas was not in place by the Monday deadline specified in the sport's collective bargaining agreement, according to a Las Vegas official. Steve Hill, CEO and president of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said Tuesday that having a framework of an agreement in place was enough to satisfy the league and the union.

Lame-Duck Athletics Seek Place To Play Before Vegas Ballpark Is Ready

Mon, 2024-01-15 21:00

Between the end of their lease in Oakland and the readiness of their ballpark in Las Vegas, the Athletics will become the Wandering Minstrels of the Majors. Granted approval for their move by major-league owners in November, the Athletics have entered a baseball Twilight Zone with many potential twist endings. What to do during the intervening three seasons is the biggest question facing the club since Bowie Kuhn vetoed the sale of Rollie Fingers and Joe Rudi by outspoken A's owner Charlie Finley at the dawn of free agency nearly a half-century ago. Options range from sharing Oracle Park, the waterfront park where the Giants play, in downtown San Francisco to playing in Triple-A facilities in Summerlin, Nevada – current home of Oakland's Triple-A affiliate – or Sacramento, where the Giants have their AAA team.

Athletics reportedly sign Edgar Montero, Jose Ramos as international signing period opens

Mon, 2024-01-15 15:17

Major League Baseball's international signing period opened Monday and the Oakland Athletics are expected to add four of Baseball America's Top 100 bonus list. The A's haven't confirmed any signings yet, but reports suggest that they have signed shortstop Edgar Montero, outfielder Jose Ramos and right-hander Erick Matos. Montero is shortstop that may eventually have to move to third base. Baseball America says that he is a player “that is trending in the right direction” and has drawn praise for his hitting ability and power potential.

Elephant Rumblings: Happy International Signing Day

Mon, 2024-01-15 07:00

Happy MLK Day, Athletics Nation! And Happy International Signing Day, as well. A's fans don't often get to celebrate fun stuff like splashy free agent signings, but the A's are expected to ink three international prospects among Baseball America's top 50 . Our own Kris Willis recently gave a great rundown on the prospects linked to the A's—all three of them position players—and I'm sure he won't miss a beat as the moves are being made. Jesse Sanchez at MLB.com also put up an International Signing Day guide yesterday if you're looking for a broader view of who's in play and what other teams around the league might be doing. Have a wonderful holiday, AN. A's Coverage: Projecting A's Miguel Andújar

Which Players Could the A's Sign as Potential Trade Deadline Pieces? The Oakland A's need more players that could become trade pieces during the season in order to stock up the farm system Author: Jason Burke Publish date: Jan 15, 2024 7:00 AM EST Last off-season we saw the Kansas City Royals sign Aroldis Chapman only to trade him at the deadline in exchange for Cole Ragans, who went on to have one of the best second halves in the Majors, finishing 7th in ERA (2.64) and 4th in fWAR (2.4). Obviously, the big question for Ragans will be whether or not he can sustain that success over a full season, but for now he looks like a key piece in the Royals having more success in 2024 than they did last

Elephant Rumblings: A's to host "Fireside Chat" in Vegas this month

Sat, 2024-01-13 07:00

The Vegas Chamber announced Thursday night that they'll be hosting a fireside chat in Las Vegas with the Oakland Athletics January 24 in which the franchise's leadership will “address the [Las Vegas] community for the first time.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vegas Chamber (@vegaschamber) The A's have gone radio silently in recent weeks after indefinitely delaying their planned stadium renderings reveal. Since then, there have been rumors about John Fisher's inability to secure a robust financing package to build the proposed new stadium. It's unclear what topics they will and will not cover at the talk but my guess is they'll try to dodge questions about the design and financing

On the surface, not a huge deal, but it could have an big impact on how the Opening Day roster looks. A's History: Hall of Famer From Across the Bay Willie McCovey played with the Oakland A's very briefly Author: Jason Burke Publish date: Jan 10, 2024 2:00 PM EST This year could very well be the last season of baseball in Oakland for the A's, and with that in mind, we thought it would be fitting to remember every player that has worn an A's jersey at some point in time. That is why, every day this year we are celebrating A's history by talking about a slew of players on their birthdays. This week we've changed up the format a little bit. With so many birthdays in recent days, we're going to start really focusing on one or two players from the day's list and talking

Elephant Rumblings: Former A's lefty finds a new home

Sun, 2024-01-07 07:00

Former Oakland Athletics left-hander Sean Manaea has a new home after agreeing to a two-year deal with the New York Mets worth a reported $28 million. The deal reportedly includes an opt-out after the 2024 season . Oakland traded Manaea to the Padres in April of 2022 along with Aaron Holiday in exchange for Adrian Martinez and Euribiel Angeles. He spent one season in San Diego before signing with the Giants. Manaea struggled through the first part of the 2023 season and lost his spot in the Giants' rotation. He made a late adjustment though and returned to the rotation in September pitching well over his final four starts. He opted out of his deal that would have paid him $12.5 million to enter

Elephant Rumblings: A's fulfill requirements to stay on revenue sharing indefinitely

Sat, 2024-01-06 07:00

It's a new year, but the same old penny-pinching John Fisher at the top of the Oakland A's. In reaction to the PR hit they received for cowardly denying the Oakland Ballers an opportunity to play at the Coliseum in 2024, the A's tried to get some positive press out by confirming that the team met the requirements to indefinitely remain in the league's revenue sharing program — i.e. Of course, the A's used their external PR department, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, to disseminate their message. The franchise had a January 15 deadline to get a binding agreement for a new stadium deal, which they met long ago when they completed an agreement with Bally's Corp. to build a ballpark on the company's Tropicana site in Las Vegas.

Yankees Trade Partner History: Oakland Athletics

Sat, 2024-01-06 05:00

It probably should not surprise that the Yankees and Athletics, two franchises with long histories, have a considerable trade history with each other. The first occurred in 1903 when the New York Highlanders purchased Dave Fultz from the Philadelphia Athletics — amusingly enough, New York traded him back three years later. Most recently, New York sent considerable prospect capital to Oakland to bring Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino to the Bronx at the 2022 Trade Deadline.
