Mariners fail to capitalize on chances in loss to Athletics
The Mariners' path to a second straight defeat that once again featured a paucity of runs scored was slightly different this time. Unlike their loss in the previous defeat, where base runners and the possibility of scoring runs were largely nonexistent, the Mariners had traffic on the bases, runners in scoring position and plenty of opportunities to do something more than they did, Saturday night. Seattle put the leadoff runner on base in four of the first six innings. The Mariners had a runner on base in six of the first seven innings and seven innings total, and the A's aided their chances by walking six hitters, hitting two batters and committing two errors.
Seattle Mariners Offense Goes Quiet in 7-0 Shutout Loss Against Athletics
One day after they showed impressive fight and late-game heroics in coming away with an Opening Day win, the Seattle Mariners failed to find that same fight in a 7-0 shutout loss against the Athletics on Friday at T-Mobile Park. Through the first four innings, Seattle struggled to generate any offense. The Athletics got some runners on in the early portions of the game, but it remained scoreless through four. The Athletics broke the seal in the top of the fifth courtesy of a two-run home run hit by Brent Rooker.
Mariners offense goes silent in shutout loss
All the frustration felt by fans for the first six innings on opening night and all the memes, snarky tweets and comments that might have been prematurely sent or were waiting to be shared about the same ol' Mariners, having the same feckless offensive production as last season while suffering yet another run-deprived loss, well, they were good to go for Friday night. With an announced crowd of 25,061 in attendance for the second game of the season, the Mariners offered a reminder of their issues from last season and potential weaknesses this season, getting shut out in a 7-0 loss. The Mariners mustered only five hits — all singles — while drawing three walks and striking out 13 times. Luis Castillo gave the Mariners a decent outing.
Yes, there really are two MLB players named Max Muncy, and the Dodgers and Athletics hitters have so much in common
The odds seem so absolutely miniscule. There are two guys named Max Muncy in Major League Baseball. They aren't related. They were both born on Aug. 25, although 12 years apart. They were both drafted by the Oakland Athletics. And now, finally, they're both big-league regulars. The Dodgers' Max Muncy has been a starter in L.A. since 2018 after making his MLB debut in 2015 for Oakland. The A's Max Muncy made his MLB debut on Thursday and slugged his first big-league home run on Friday. 430 feet! Polanco and Arozarena hit 8th-inning HRs to lift Mariners over Athletics 4-2
Jorge Polanco and Randy Arozarena hit eighth-inning home runs and the Seattle Mariners rallied to beat the Athletics 4-2 on Thursday night. Polanco's two-out, two-run home run to dead center field sealed the win after Arozarena tied it at 2 with a shot to left. The outburst came as Seattle celebrated new Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki, who threw out the first pitch. Tyler Soderstrom — one of three players under the age of 24 in the Athletics' opening day starting lineup — hit two solo home runs in his team's first game of the post-Oakland era.
