Oakland A's name Opening Day starter vs. Cleveland Guardians
Alex Wood moved across the Bay to the A's over the winter in part because he wanted to show he's still got what it takes to be a starting pitcher. Tuesday, the 33-year-old left-hander was named Opening Day starter for the first time in his 12-year big league career. Wood had been almost exclusively a starter during his career, including his first two seasons with the Giants. Wood told reporters earlier in camp that the opportunity to be a starter was a big factor in choosing to sign the A's.
Shane Bieber named opening-day starter for 5th consecutive season for Cleveland Guardians
Shane Bieber, who has shown signs of being an ace again for Cleveland following an injury-slowed 2023, will start the Guardians' opener for the fifth straight season. The 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner, Bieber has had a solid spring training with the Guardians after making just 21 starts last season due to elbow issues. Bieber went 6-6 with a 3.80 ERA last season but was sidelined from mid-July until late September. Bieber is 60-32 with a 3.27 ERA in 134 games since debuting with Cleveland in 2018.
A's spring training: Ross Stripling bounces back, J.D. Davis stays hot as A's tie again
Right-hander Ross Stripling bounced back Monday from two rough spring training starts to give the Oakland A's five strong innings and his ex-Giants teammate, J.D. Davis, kept swinging a hot bat in Arizona. Stripling, 34, didn't give up a lot of hard contact against the Arizona Diamondbacks while permitting three runs in what turned out to be Oakland second consecutive 3-3 tie. The A's projected fourth starter to begin the season, Stripling looked much better than his previous two starts when he got roughed up for 14 runs over 7 1/3 innings to push his ERA over 10. Davis, batting second as the designated hitter in his second A's game, had two hits against Merrill Kelly, one of Arizona's aces who struck out seven in his 3 1/3 innings.

Best bets: 2024 Oakland Athletics World Series odds, win total and more
The Oakland Athletics finished a dismal 50-112 last season, but this season will be a historic one for the franchise. The team plans to relocate to Las Vegas after its lease at the Oakland Coliseum expires following the 2024 season, becoming the 1st American League franchise to relocate since 1972. The A's haven't made the postseason since falling in the American League Divisional Series in 4 games after the COVID-shortened 2020 season. The A's were 10 games over .500 in 2021, winning 86 games, but they have averaged 107 losses per season in the previous 2 campaigns under manager Mark Kotsay.
A's spring training: J.D. Davis wastes no time impressing in Oakland debut
It took just two pitches and one swing for the J.D. Davis Redemption Tour to begin as the A's new third baseman smoked a double to the gap in left-center Sunday in his first spring training at-bat for Oakland. Davis, who signed with the A's Friday after being unceremoniously released by the Giants earlier in the week, looked comfortable in his green No. 5 Oakland jersey. Davis hadn't played since getting two hits and two RBIs for the Giants on March 4, but he looked in midseason form while unloading on San Jose-born Chicago starter Nick Nastrini's 1-0 fastball for a double.

A's spring training: J.D. Davis calls release by SF Giants a punch to the gut
New A's third baseman J.D. Davis said he's appreciative of his opportunity with Oakland after absorbing “a punch to the gut” when the Giants released him earlier this week. Davis, who finalized his $2.5 million, one-year deal with the A's on Saturday, was cut by the Giants, who utilized a contractual loophole to part ways with the 30-year-old on Monday after he beat the team last month in arbitration.

When Luis Medina went down due to a right knee sprain, the competition seemed to be over after Boyle got off to a hot start this spring. But over his past three starts, he's been walking more and more guys, so his spot on the roster may not be as solid as we once thought. Boyle is still pitching effectively, holding a 2.93 ERA across 15 1/3 innings
