Former major league pitcher Jeff Bittiger, a scout for 22 years with the Athletics, died on Saturday morning, the team announced. He was 63. The organization did not disclose the cause of death. The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, a pro independent league franchise for whom Bittiger was a longtime pitcher, coach and front office staffer, announced later Saturday that he died at his home in Pennsylvania “after a private battle with cancer.” “Bitt will be remembered for his determination on and off the field, his love for the game of baseball and the countless players he coached and helped to greater career success,” the North Dakota-based RedHawks said in a statement. “He's been battling cancer privately

Guardians All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan was out of the lineup for their July 18 game against the Athletics due to nagging right wrist soreness. Manager Stephen Vogt said Kwan's status is day-to-day and that he has been dealing with wrist issues for over a month. Kwan left a May 28 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to wrist inflammation. After playing in in the All Star Game on July 15, Kwan met with doctors on July 16 and received an injection.

JP Sears to get the second half started for the A’s

The green and gold started off the year in a new home at Sutter Health Park, and over the last few months have made many memories for A's fans in West Sacramento and beyond. This young team ended the first half collectively playing great baseball, and have an identity for themselves now in West Sac, with those like Nick Kurtz, Jacob Wilson, Denzel Clarke and Mason Miller leading the way. Here is my countdown of the Top 5 moments of the first half. Colby Thomas made his MLB debut at the end of June, coming up as the No. 2 prospect.

While Nick Kurtz arrived in the majors with plenty of hype, he didn't immediately set the world on fire. The 22-year-old first baseman made his MLB debut on April 23, just nine months after the Athletics took him with the No. 4 overall pick. By May 19, he was batting .208 with a .558 OPS, following up his first career home run with an 0-for-21 cold streak. Kurtz broke out of that slump on May 20, and he hasn't looked back since.

Athletics at Cleveland Guardians Game Preview

Brent Rooker of the Athletics was the breakout performer at the All-Star Game in Atlanta, belting a three-run homer in the seventh inning and clearing the fence twice in the game-deciding swing-off. The 30-year-old designated hitter returns to the field Friday, when the A's begin a three-game road series against the Cleveland Guardians. Left-hander JP Sears (7-7, 4.79 ERA) starts for the visitors against Guardians right-hander Slade Cecconi (4-4, 3.44) as both squads seek to maintain the momentum they had prior to the break.

Mason Miller made waves when he made his Major League Baseball debut in 2023. The 26-year-old has grown into one of the better closers in the league and is one of the bright spots of Mark Kotsay's pitching staff. Unfortunately for him, the Athletics manager might be without his top reliever once the MLB trade deadline rolls around. While the Athletics are nowhere near playoff contention, that has not stopped them from being active on the trade market.
